ARA Professional Registration (Foundation, Registered, Fellow)

Professional certification Libraries and archives
Granted by Archives and Records Association (UK & Ireland) Usual length Varies with the applicant's experience Level Intermediate to advanced

The awarding body’s page Fees, dates and entry requirements are there, not here.

What it is

The professional registration programme for people working in archives, records management and conservation, in three grades: Foundation, Registered and Fellow. It is earned not by exam but by an application showing the candidate's competencies against the association's competency framework for the sector, with reflection on practice and continuing professional development. It is the counterpart of CILIP's registration for librarians.

Who it suits

Archivists, records managers and conservators, and those working in university and government archives who want professional recognition of their practice.

What it requires

The association says registration is open to anyone working or volunteering in the sector. Foundation and Registered candidates need a mentor who supports them and writes a reference; Fellowship is for those already Registered. Check with the association whether people living outside the UK and Ireland can register.

How it is earned

Enrol in the programme, choose a mentor, self-assess against the competency framework, then build the application on the programme platform and submit it for assessment.
