1What it is
An American credential for interpreters in hospitals and clinics, in two stages: a knowledge exam in English on ethics, medical terminology and the healthcare setting, then a bilingual performance exam in consecutive, simultaneous and sight interpreting and translation. Arabic is one of only three languages, with Spanish and Mandarin, in which the full title is granted; other languages have the knowledge-stage credential and a general performance credential.
2Who it suits
Arabic-English interpreters in healthcare, especially in American hospitals or those following American standards.
3What it requires
Age 18, a secondary school credential or equivalent from any country, proof of proficiency in Arabic and English by a means the commission accepts, and at least 40 hours of healthcare interpreter training; work experience does not count in its place.
4How it is earned
Pass the knowledge exam first, then the performance exam within a period the commission sets.
