1What it is
The National Center for State Courts writes the written and oral court interpreter exams, and each state grants its own credential on its own terms. The credential is required to interpret in court proceedings between English and a litigant's language.
2Who it suits
Interpreters living in the United States or working with its courts.
3What it requires
Registration with the court of the state concerned and meeting its requirements, which vary by state.
4How it is earned
A written exam, then an oral exam where one exists for the language; for languages without one, states assess proficiency otherwise. Federal courts credential separately.
