1What it is
A professional title the institute grants to highly competent language practitioners, carrying a designation for the field: translator, interpreter, education or language specialist. It is earned not by a new exam but by showing current professional practice, a specialist qualification and a record of continuing professional development.
2Who it suits
Translators, interpreters and teachers of language and translation with years in the profession who want the highest recognition the institute grants.
3What it requires
Full membership or fellowship of CIOL, or membership of a qualifying body such as ITI or AIIC; normally several years of current practice; a degree-level language qualification, and a specialist translation or interpreting qualification for that designation; and a CPD record with a plan for the coming year.
4How it is earned
CIOL members apply after holding their grade for a period; members of other bodies contact the membership team to learn what evidence is needed.
When a centre or body posts a course that prepares for it, we send you one email about it.
